Introduction To The Stator of DC Motors

In the realm of electric motors, the structure of a direct current (DC) motor consists of two main components: the stator and the rotor. The stator, which remains stationary during the operation of the motor, plays a crucial role in generating the magnetic field essential for the motor's functionality. It is composed of several key elements including the motor housing, main magnetic poles, commutating poles, end caps, bearings, and brush assemblies.

1. Main Magnetic Poles

The primary function of the main magnetic poles is to create the air-gap magnetic field necessary for motor operation. These poles are typically comprised of a main magnetic pole core and an excitation winding. The core is constructed by stacking and riveting silicon steel sheets with a thickness ranging from 0.5mm to 1.5mm. It is divided into two parts: the pole body and the pole shoe. The part where the excitation winding is wound is referred to as the pole body, while the widened section below is known as the pole shoe. The pole shoe, wider than the pole body, serves the dual purpose of adjusting the magnetic field distribution in the air gap and facilitating the fixation of the excitation winding. The excitation winding, made of insulated copper wire, is wound around the main magnetic pole core. The entire main magnetic pole assembly is fastened to the motor housing using screws.

2. Commutating Poles

Communtating poles play a crucial role in improving commutation and reducing the likelihood of sparking between the brushes and the commutator during motor operation. Typically installed between two adjacent main magnetic poles, commutating poles consist of a commutating pole core and commutating pole winding. The winding is made of insulated conductors wound around the commutating pole core, and the number of commutating poles matches that of the main magnetic poles.

3. Motor Housing

The outer casing of the motor stator is known as the motor housing. It serves two primary functions:

  1. Fixing the main magnetic poles, commutating poles, and end caps, providing support and stability to the entire motor assembly.

  2. Acting as a part of the magnetic circuit, forming a magnetic path between the magnetic poles. The section through which magnetic flux passes is referred to as the magnetic yoke. To ensure that the motor housing possesses sufficient mechanical strength and good magnetic properties, it is typically made of cast steel or welded steel plates.

4. Brush Assembly

The brush assembly is responsible for introducing or extracting direct current voltage and current. It comprises brushes, brush holders, brush arms, and brush arm bases. The brushes are housed within the brush holders and are pressed by springs to establish good sliding contact between the brushes and the commutator. The brush holder is fixed on the brush arm, which is mounted on a circular brush arm base. These components must be insulated from each other. The brush arm base is installed on the end cap or bearing inner cover, with adjustable circumferential positioning for alignment purposes.
